Chapter 20

APRIL

This was a bad idea.

I peered over the steering wheel, fighting back the urge to put the car in gear and drive back down the street. The Coupe house practically leered at me, large and imposing in every sense. But the house wasn’t nearly as daunting a prospect as its inhabitants.

I knew I shouldn’t have accepted Heather’s invitation. Thanksgiving was such a familial holiday; I was sure I would have felt a bit out of place even in the best circumstances. These were far from the best circumstances. I was going to be in the same space as William and her, the two people I was worried about saying the wrong thing to.

But Heather had been adamant. I had stood her up too many times, she argued, and she wasn’t taking no for an answer. Plus, and her voice had turned pleading as she said it, she needed a buffer between her family and her. It had been a while since they were all together under the same roof, and there was no way she was going through that alone.

Every instinct in my body had screamed no. Just say no and deal with the fallout later. No matter how mad she got, she would eventually forgive me, right? But I had also seen the opportunity behind the invitation. I needed to talk to someone about what I was going through. I needed to share it all, and if I couldn’t do that with my best friend, then what was the point? A Thanksgiving party would be the perfect setting; she would be drunk because she was Heather, and hopefully, the stress of dealing with her family would cushion what I had to tell her.

I had decided, since the office, that telling William was off the table, at least for now. Not only had he lied to me about the thing with Charlotte, but there was also no way I was telling him and Heather. I would test out the waters first with Heather and then, depending on how that went, decide on when to break it to William.

I took a deep breath, reaching for the box of wine in the passenger seat and getting out of the car. The walk up the driveway took an eternity. I changed my mind at every step, playing out the apologies that I would give for canceling and realizing none of them would work because I had already agreed. I was on my sixth cycle, trying out ‘sudden onset of nausea’, which would not only be half-true but act as a nice little segue into revealing my pregnancy when the front door opened and a jubilant Heather came spilling out of the house.

“Oh, thank heavens!” she screamed as she wrapped me in a bear hug.

Segue?

“Come on. My mom is driving me insane, and the dinner hasn’t even started.”

“Is William here yet?”

“Nah. He always comes late to these things. Or not at all. Here’s hoping, eh?” She chuckled and pulled me into the house.
